Some basic differences in cloud storage - not exhautive
Although I have been using Google Drive for past decade due to their usability and more free storage than other cloud service providers. I have used OneDrive and Dropbox to play around.
When it come to Basic features, both are very similar with Sharing, Backup, Offline access, Security, Collaboration as their main point for sale. Dropbox gives 2 GB of space for free account whereas OneDrive provides 5GB with QUT account. Beyond that we need to pay monthly or annually fee depending on our need with price being in same range. Both also use similar reward system for the referral. When it comes to free storage, none can beat google for their free account 15GB and paid account 30GB of storage. OneDrive has more options to link with other services and app from microsoft. However, DropBox has linked with few other services.
Incase of terms and conditions, both has comprehensive information on how they collect, use and handle our information when we use their websites, software and services. Dropbox claims they collect our personal information, information on devices we use and cookies for improving service they provide. These information are stored on their server with tight security. Shared with third party for purpose stated above and if required by law. Onedrive has given specific control for users to choose what to share with company with each of their services. The storage of information and sharing are very similar to dropbox.
Copyright for dropbox is governed by digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 of United State and act accordingly after reporting to the company with the format they provided. Unlike dropbox, oneDrive uses Copyright law of respective users’ country.
The cloud storage win over network drive when it comes to accessibility. Taking into Consideration, the internet connectivity is in place, we can access content on cloud from any location. Geography and physical location has no meaning to cloud services. Whereas, network drive, including the QUT H drive, doesn’t have use once we are out of the Local Area Network (LAN) or unless we use Virtual Private Network (VPN). Such option become expensive if our internet connection has limited data package as VPN is bandwidth intensive. In addition, you will have ownership of cloud storage unless you cease to use that account. Whereas if you left the company you worked for, that drive will be gone with your user account.
On the other hand, once we give access permission to the cloud service such as dropbox, they access our devices without our knowledge and load our documents. This was evident from me locating more than 4000 additional pictures under “Camera upload” on my dropBox account which were from my Office Camera.
