Ever Since this broke in November 2019, it has started growing worse every passing day in front of our eyes. Following news and press cover for a count of new cases and casualties from different countries like one would do in case of Olympic medal result. The more you watch these media coverage, the more you \become stressed out and want to give up going out altogether.
Then, you put off your TV/Social Media news channel and come to your real life, you reflect on the current situation, reflect on government’s advice and instruction, and think about your own situation. The past 4 months are literally gone doing this in an endless loop. Following every instruction such as proper handwashing, social distancing and eating healthy were doable, however, coming to giving up your job was one heavily discussed issue.
For people who work for an industry that has a possibility of working remotely from home is bliss. The same is also for people who have a full time permanent jobs. But for many people like my brother and nephew especially those international students, whose work is casual, meaning they are only paid for service they provided and whose service needs to be done at a certain location, like manual and laborer’s job, it is an uphill task to reach a decision. Whether to continue working for $$ to survive as this pandemic is uncertain or whether to stop working altogether so that it will not only make self safe from contracting the virus but also contribute to stop spreading it around.
Stop going to work sounds like a noble decision for now as it is in the interest of everyone, yet giving up work is riskier considering the uncertainty surrounding the whole situation including uncertainty of finding jobs after this period is over. There are other things to be considered as health care costs and isolation places. This argument between the mind which says -enough is enough, stop going to work now to not regret later and there is another part of the same mind saying, who can guess when this is going to be over. What if you stopped working now and this thing goes one for years. I am sure, for many others, there may be more pressing reasons than that and in big dilemma.
In such a time, I wish I have a third eye to predict our future. We don’t have an answer to any yet. We don’t know if we are still going to work or stop tomorrow. Whatever decision anyone takes, let it be the best one.
